Troubleshooting

CS 1.6 troubleshooting.

Find your issue below and follow the steps. If you still need help, contact support with the error message you see.

The download stopped

Use Resume or Retry in your browser's download list. Check free disk space and your connection. If the download will not resume, delete the incomplete ZIP and download it again.

Windows cannot extract the ZIP

Wait for the download to finish and use Extract All into a new folder with enough free space. Do not open the game from inside the ZIP. If extraction still fails, include the exact Windows error in your support request.

A file is missing or the launcher refuses to start

Confirm that Counter-Strike.exe, Game and Assets are together. Re-extract the complete archive to a fresh folder. Do not replace DLLs with files from random DLL download sites or mix files from different client builds.

If a security product reports a detection, retain the detection name and file path and contact support. Do not add exclusions or turn off security protections as a workaround.

The game opens with a black screen or display problem

Install a current graphics driver from the GPU manufacturer or Windows Update. Try the game's windowed mode and a lower resolution where the options are accessible. Report the Windows version, graphics adapter and exact symptom.

A server rejects the connection

Check the address, port, password and server availability. A server may be full, require a different client or Steam authentication, or reject a player under its own rules. Test another compatible server to distinguish a server-specific problem from a general connection problem.
