Installation guide

How to install CS 1.6.

This portable Counter-Strike 1.6 package runs from its extracted folder. It does not use a separate installation wizard.

1. Save the complete download

Use the download button on the CS 1.6 download page. Save counter-strike.zip and wait until the browser reports that the download has finished. The current file is 476.1 MB.

For an interrupted transfer, use your browser's Resume or Retry option.

2. Extract every file to a new folder

In File Explorer, right-click the ZIP and choose Extract All. Pick a new, writable folder, such as a folder named Counter-Strike in your Documents folder. Do not extract over another game installation.

When extraction finishes, the top level contains Counter-Strike.exe, Game, and Assets. Keep all three together. Opening an executable inside the ZIP is not a complete extraction.

3. Open Counter-Strike.exe

Open the top-level Counter-Strike.exe. Use this launcher instead of opening files inside Game directly. Normal startup does not ask for administrator privileges or install a firewall rule.

The launcher is unsigned, so Windows or your browser may display a warning. Keep Windows security protections enabled. If a security product blocks the file, contact [email protected] with the message shown.

4. Set up and play

Use the game's options to set your player name, resolution, controls and sound. Read how to play online for server browsing and direct connections. Server rules and admission requirements vary.

Moving, updating and removing the portable copy

Close the game and move the entire extracted folder to keep your settings.

For an update, extract the new release into a separate folder and keep your old copy until you are ready to remove it. Avoid mixing files from different versions.

To remove the portable copy, close the game and delete its folder. Back up any settings you want to keep first.
